いかに〜か

how (very), to what extent (formal, emphatic)

Formation: いかに + plain form (adjective / verb; な-adjective or noun often with である) + か

A formal way to say 'how (very) X', used to emphasise the degree of something, often as an embedded clause before を or が. It belongs to essays, editorials and speeches, where どんなに or どれほど would be plainer. The form いかに〜ことか is an exclamatory version. It is different from いかん, which means 'depending on', and from いかに〜ても, which means 'however much'.

Variants: いかに〜ことか

『映画ちいかわ』を国際政治学から読み解く:なぜ争いは始まり、なぜ終わらないのか · 2026年11月6日

『映画ちいかわ』の結末は、目の前の脅威を排除することと、紛争の根本原因を取り除くことが、いかに異なるかを描き出している。

The ending of "Chiikawa the Movie" portrays how different it is to eliminate the threat in front of one's eyes and to remove the root causes of a conflict.

いかに combines with the plain verb 異なる and the closing か to form an embedded clause, which is the object of 描き出している. It compares the two 〜こと phrases marked by と and が, and stresses how great the difference is rather than asking a real question. The writer prefers it to どれほど or どんなに because its formal tone suits this concluding statement. Do not mix it up with いかん, which means 'depending on'.
